WHAT WE HAVE NOT SEEN BEFORE OF STREISAND

BARBRA_STREISAND_001342
Barbra Streisand has re-signed with her long-time recording label Columbia Records and will release "a 12-set DVD that consists of never before seen footage directly from Barbra’s archives," according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The multi-award winning Streisand, who released her first album, The Barbra Streisand Album, in 1963, has sold over 70 millions records for the label. Her long-time manager Marty Erlichman has reportedly been in heated talks with execs about keeping Streisand on the Sony-owned record label.

Perhaps as exciting for fans of the legendary entertainer is news that to commemorate her 50th anniversary, "Columbia will also release a 12-set DVD featuring unprecedented access into Streisand's professional and personal life. The DVD set will consist of never before seen footage directly from Barbra’s archives."

Streisand released a statement, saying, “From the day Goddard Lieberson signed me almost 50 years ago, Columbia Records has been my recording home, and I am thrilled to continue that partnership for many years to come.”

Columbia Records Chairman and COO Steve Barnett adds, “There are stars and there are superstars, and there’s Barbra Streisand... Columbia Records is proud to play a vital role in her extraordinary career. We’re looking forward to the next chapter in our long and fruitful relationship.”

Besides her fabled work as a recording artist and Academy Award-winning work as a film actress, Streisand is also a noted philanthropist. According to the press release, "The Streisand Foundation has given millions of dollars in more than 2100 grants to over 700 non-profit organizations including her substantial underwriting of The Cedars-Sinai Barbra Streisand Women’s Cardiovascular Research and Education Program which addresses the leading cause of death among women in the United States, as well as men." Streisand was also honoured last year by the Cedars-Sinai Board of Governors for her generous support and dedication to the Cedars-Sinai Women’s Heart Centre.

Last summer, as Streisand released her most recent album What Matters Most, biographer William Mann offered his perspective on why Streisand remains relevant and continues to fascinate her legions of fans.

ROBERTA FLACK - LET IT BE ROBERTA - ROBERTA FLACK SINGS THE BEATLES

let it be roberta
Roberta Flack the four-time Grammy Award-winning artist is back with a new song and forthcoming album, "LET IT BE ROBERTA"--a collection of Beatles song interpretations. Roberta Flack has long been known as an unparalleled musician who effortlessly inhabits the worlds of pop, soul, R&B, jazz and folk. From her very first recording , "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" which hit #1 in the U.S across all charts, Flack has created strong emotional bonds with her listeners through her poignant musicality and unerring stylizations while also shining an uncompromising light onto the culture and politics of the times.

Let It Be Roberta is Flack's first in 8 years and was produced by Sherrod Barnes, who has also produced Beyonce' and Angie Stone, with contributing producers Jerry Barnes and Barry Miles, and is slated for release on February 7th worldwide.

Since bursting onto the scene in 1969 with the blockbuster album "First Take" (produced by the legendary Joel Dorn), she's followed her fiercely uncompromising lyrical and musical muses earning her a place alongside pioneering artists such as Aretha Franklin, Elton John, and Nina Simone. A multiple Grammy winner, she is the only artist along with U2 to win "Record of the Year" in consecutive years (for "The First Time, Ever I Saw Your Face" and "Killing Me Softly"). Although she's taken some time between recordings, she's never stopped performing having constantly toured worldwide. Flack, a national treasure gives her time freely to a host of charitable and humanitarian causes--among them, the ASPCA (spokesperson of the year for 2011) and the Roberta Flack School of Music in Bronx, NY (which she founded in 2006).

Says Roberta: "My passion for this project comes from the magical genius of the greatest songwriters of all time. Love, inspiration, friendship and my own life's lessons come together when I sing the songs they created. I am honoured to be a part of the fabulous legacy of the Beatles."

10 THINGS NOT TO SAY AT A WEDDING

weddings

A wedding is an auspicious event that not only celebrates a union of two people, but joins two families together as well. On this happy occasion, a wrong comment, even if its said as a joke, can have a lasting impact on the whole marriage, turning it into an eternal tiff rather than eternal bliss. So make sure you’re not the one responsible for a spat or an uncomfortable atmosphere by avoiding these ten remarks, because when it comes to a wedding, silence is surely the best policy!

1. Never make any mention of past marriages

Past is past and it should remain that way. The couple is starting a new life and therefore, reminding them of a previous marriage in any way is the last thing you would want to do. Even funny comments like, “This one is way better than your last one” or “I hope this one lasts longer than the previous one”, are a big NO.

2. Don’t pass a negative comment about the bride’s dress

The bride’s dress should not bother you because you’re not the one who’s wearing it, and obviously she wouldn’t be wearing it if she thought it were bad! So comments like, “Wasn’t it available in a different colour?” or “I think this should have been a little longer/shorter” or “Why didn’t you go to that designer I told you about?”, should be avoided. You don’t want to make a bride loose her confidence on her special day!

3. Don’t criticize the menu

It’s their wedding, therefore they decide the menu. So whatever comes your way should be appreciated. Still if you feel that you can’t have the food over there, then a polite comment like, “My stomach is upset”, or something similar is a better option than actually criticizing the food.

weddings_agfv

4. Never compare the bride and the groom

Never compare the bride and the groom even if the bride is downright ugly or the groom has the looks of a Greek god and vice versa. As long the couple is happy with each other, you should be happy for them as well. Some people even have the audacity to whisper in the bride or the groom’s ear that they could have done so much better. This is plain rude and a comment like this deserves nothing but tight slap on the speaker’s face.

5. Check before mentioning a deceased family member

A wedding is a happy occasion and the mention of someone who has passed away can give the event a sad atmosphere, especially if that person was close to the bride or groom and their families. Hence it is always better to play it safe and avoid mentioning such a person because you never know who you might end up upsetting.

6. Keep the secrets about bridge and groom to yourself

Everyone has secrets and everyone has done crazy things in the past, and just because someone is getting married doesn’t mean he/she would want their spouse to know, especially on their wedding day. However, relating a funny incident is completely harmless, but besides that, all the wild crazy stuff should go with you to your grave.

weddings_alda

7. Don’t tell mother-in-law jokes

Mother-in-law jokes are no doubt very funny but a wedding is not the best place to share them, especially when two newly made mother-in-laws are on the loose. You never know how they or other people might take them, that is why its better to save them for another occasion.

8. If you had/have other plans don’t make any mention of them

People invite you to their wedding because they want you to be a part of their special day and want to share their happiness with you. Saying that you have to go somewhere else or had to be somewhere else gives the impression that rather than being a part of their joy, you were actually doing them a favour by attending the event, and this could even hurt their feelings.

weddings_acda

9. Don’t predict the future of the marriage

As a joke, many people, especially the bride and groom’s friends, actually make bets guessing how long would it take for the couple to break the marriage bond. Believe me its not funny, on the contrary its rude and offensive and I shouldn’t even be telling you to keep away from such games, you should be sensible enough to know that yourself!

10. Stop bragging about your gift to the couple

Ok, just because you gave a great expensive gift or a fat cheque to the newly wed couple doesn’t mean that you start bragging about it. Not everyone can afford it and your showing off can make people feel inferior and uncomfortable with their gift or money.

MORE SELF ANNIHILATING SENTENCES

Are you ever stuck for words or in need of a way out of a tricky conversation? Not any more – ‘Self-Annihilating Sentences‘ are the perfect get-out clause which will instantly put an end to any argumentative or stagnant discourse!

  • No man can die properly without experience.
  • No matter where you go, there you are.
  • No two things are the same, no matter how you look at them.
  • Show me an honest man and I'll show you a man who tells the truth.
  • An artist without paints can't paint unless he has a canvas.
  • Everything that exists has a good reason for existence - which has long since disappeared.
  • All simplifying assumptions are too complicated.
  • If your father was sterile, the same is probably true of you.

BOSSA JAZZ

Two CD compilation that explores the Brazilian Jazz groups and artists at the centre of the Bossa Nova explosion of the early 1960s, known as 'Samba Jazz' or 'Hard Bossa'.

ONE HIT WONDER … DAVID SOUL

ONE HIT WONDER …
DAVID SOUL 09UE7R6T
ARTIST: David Soul
SONG: Don’t Give Up On Us
YEAR: 1977
David Soul (born August 28, 1943) is an American-British actor and singer, best known for his role as Detective Kenneth "Hutch" Hutchinson in the television programme Starsky and Hutch (1975-1979). He gained British citizenship in 2004
The son of a Chicago minister, actor David Soul actually launched his career as a folk singer. Born David Richard Solbert on August 28, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois, David moved to Mexico during his youth, when his father took a lengthy assignment as diplomatic advisor for the U.S. State Department. The experience (and the Mexican environment) engendered in young Solberg a permanent love of indigenous folk music
After impulsively deciding to become a stage performer, and studying with the legendary Uta_Hagen in New York, Soul definitively opted to embark upon a singing career. From 1966 to 1967, the performer turned up as the hooded "mystery singer" on the syndicated television talkfest The_Merv_Griffin_Show.
.
In the mid-late 1970s, Soul returned to his singing roots. Produced by Tony Macaulay, he recorded such hits as "Don't Give Up on Us" (1976) which reached number one in the US and the UK, and "Silver Lady" (1977) which also topped the charts in the UK. Between 1976-78, he had five UK Top 20 singles and two Top 10 albums. From 1976 to 1982 he toured extensively in the US, Europe, Far East and South America.

Whitney Houston: Whitney (1987)
Whitney Houston - Whitney [1987]
Whitney's sophomore effort, simply entitled "Whitney", was an album fill with truly great music. Whitney had the voice and some great material (thanks to her mentor Clive Davis) to put together a truly classic album.
The sound of the album is more of a sythesized-pop/R&B feel (remember, this WAS the 80s), with the signature Whitney Houston ballads. The album features productions and writing from Narada Michael Walden (who produced most of the album - and frequently produced for many, many artists throughout the 80s and early 90s), Jellybean, Billy Steinberg/Tom Kelly, and Michael Masser, among others.
Most notable hits are "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)", "So Emotional" (my personal favorite), "Love Will Save The Day", "Where Do Broken Hearts Go," and "Didn't We Almost Have It All." Another notable song is "I Know Him So Well" which features Whitney's mother Cissy Houston

This is Whitney Houston's absolute best album. This was her debut album back in February 14, 1985 and made her phenomenally successful. If you are a fan of Whitney's heartfelt music, then this and her second album "Whitney" is a must for your music collection. To date, this is Whitney's most successful studio, non-soundtrack album. The only album that tops this in sales is the Bodyguard soundtrack. This album has sold about 23 million copies worldwide, while her second album sold 19 million to date.

Whitney Houston: The Greatest Hits (2000)
Whitney Houston - The Greatest Hits [2000]
For an artist who only released four proper albums in a 15-year career, it's astounding to recall how many hits Whitney Houston was able to achieve. The two CDs on The Greatest Hits track Houston's rise from mid-'80s Top 40 balladeer to standard-setting diva. Disc 1, Cool Down, runs chronologically through Houston's down-tempo love songs, from "The Greatest Love of All" and "I Will Always Love You" to the cleverly conceived new duet with Deborah Cox, "Same Script, Different Cast." She's also showcased as the remixed of choice for DJs on the second disc, Throw Down, which serves as the antidote to the lovesick first disc. Calling in marquee mixmasters, Houston's old-shoe tunes get a new millennium polish. "My Love Is Your Love," reinterpreted by Jonathan Peters, captures the versatility of Houston's songs by making the downbeats danceable without going totally Euro-cheese. In contrast, Junior Vasquez's remix of 1985's "How Will I Know" pokes fun at the song's '80s fluffiness by layering in bells, lasers effects, and echoes on top of Whitney's enthusiastic vocals

Whitney Houston: My Love Is Your Love (1998)
Whitney Houston - My Love Is Your Love [1998]
After enduring years of listening to the same predictable material from Whitney, she managed to surprise me with the release of My Love Is Your Love. The album is full of surprises, she was able to do different musical genres and still sound incredible! She has a more hip, R&B/hip-hop sound to this album, and the catchy, R&B/hip-hop tracks like "If I Told You That", "In My Business" and "Get It Back" are great beat-driven tracks, but the beat doesn't overshadow her incredible voice. She also has a great deal of reggae influence on the title track, which is one of my favourite songs on the album. The too-hyped duet with Mariah Carey didn't impress me, that has got to be the weakest point on this album. There are some R-Kelly-style R&B jams as well like the hit "Heartbreak Hotel" with Faith Evans and Kelly Price, and the Missy Elliot-produced "Oh Yes"---my favourite track on the album, her voice sounds rich and crystal clear on that song. For vintage Whitney fans, there are still those powerhouse ballads like "Until You Come Back" that sounds similar to "I Have Nothing", the touching "You'll Never Stand Alone", "I Bow Out" and the incredible "I Learned from the Best"---her new single.

Whitney Houston: The Preachers Wife
Whitney Houston - The Preacher's Wife [1996]
This is one of Whitney's most inspirational, soul filled and spirited projects. Although not her most recent, this is one of Whitney's most inspirational, soul filled and spirited projects. This one gives us only a glimpse of what Whitney could do if she really let her gospel roots dominate.
Her vocal delivery borders flawless. She articulately and powerfully belts them out, some with the added inspirational power of a gospel choir backing her up.
This soundtrack will raise your spirits high. In this soundtrack, Whitney shares her heart, soul and spirit with the listener. The inspirational energy and passion she emits on this album have yet to be matched on any of her others.

Whitney Houston: Waiting To Exhale (1995)
waiting to exhale
Waiting to Exhale is the exception that proves the rule about mish-mash '90s soundtrack albums. Even though it features 22 different female voices, the album boasts a rare continuity because Babyface wrote or co-wrote 15 of the songs and produced all 16. Moreover, the gifted R&B artist used every song to explore the film's theme of women trying to balance self-respect and romantic desire. Not only has Babyface (nee Kenny Edmonds) created a fascinating song suite, he has produced one of the best middle-of-the-road-pop, adult- contemporary albums of the decade. Mary J. Blige stakes out a claim as the new diva on the block with an astonishing performance on "Not Gon' Cry." Babyface's music and lyrics suggest a woman barely holding back a swelling flood of anger and heartache, and Blige's brilliant vocal captures both the agitation and the restraint.

Whitney Houston: The Bodyguard (1990)
Whitney Houston - The Bodyguard [1992]
At the time of its release, this was the watershed for soundtracks, selling a kazillion copies. It documents Whitney Houston's character in the Kevin Costner movie, which required Houston to play only herself . The album is as much a testament to the production of Babyface who, through the mid-1990s, actually was the mainstream of contemporary hit music. Houston's singing is much better than her acting, and almost every song enjoyed a long tenure at the top of all the charts. Along with "I Will Always Love You" and five other Houston songs, the soundtrack also features Lisa Stansfield, Kenny G with Aaron Neville, and Joe Cocker with Sass Jordan.
